Four main steps to create a coherent pathway

All four steps are important. Complete steps 1 through 3 before starting to enter a coherent pathway into the tool. This ensures that a coherent pathway is confirmed, with a plan of action supported by leadership and teachers.

The four steps are:

1. Understand what is meant by a coherent pathway.
2. Answer key questions and set up your project.
3. Review coherent pathway examples.
4. Enter the capabilities into the Coherent Pathways tool.

Understand what is meant by a coherent pathway

A coherent pathway’s elements are capabilities and transition statements. Learn about pathway elements in these sections of the PDF:

Answer key questions and set up your project

Your leadership team should consider key questions about a coherent pathway before undertaking this work. Ensure that you are well resourced.

Discuss resourcing, leadership, and how teachers will work. Confirm how the team will communicate about and review coherent pathways. Establish your evidence standards.

This plan is a framework for developing a coherent pathway to support ākonga. It is an index of activities, materials, and handouts. It also has key questions to ask at meetings discussing your vision for ākonga.

Assemble your part of the coherent pathway’s information, including:

• Strategy
• Transition statements for the stage and capabilities

With this, enter your part of the coherent pathway into the Coherent Pathways tool.

When you choose an overarching capability, the tool will enter a default capability. You can edit this. You can also select and add learning area capabilities in support.
